When discussing parenting, many people tend to focus exclusively on what the mother must do to raise her children (Torres, 2019). The term "parenting" is often primarily associated with the mother figure, while the word "children" encompasses both boys and girls. However, two key points must be clarified. First, parenting is not solely the mother's responsibility; it should be considered a joint effort between both parents, meaning the father's involvement is equally essential. Second, according to Torres (2019), it is necessary to emphasize the inclusion of the term "daughters," as, culturally, parenting practices have been differentiated between boys and girls.
Parenting: Beyond Instruction
Concepts about who caregivers are, as well as the best conditions for parenting, present a great diversity (Gadsden et al., 2016). For many, parenting is associated with concepts such as instruction, guidance, and education (Torres, 2019). This relationship involves terms that range from the systematic transmission of knowledge and norms to the role of caregivers as mentors who correct, advise, instruct, and develop intellectual and moral skills, as well as teach good manners and courtesy (Torres, 2019). This definition, although precise and useful, is perceived as somewhat rigid and may give the impression that parenting is reduced to a mere checklist (Peterson, 2022). In this regard, good parenting is not limited to robotic attention to a child's needs. While this attention is crucial, Peterson (2022) mentions that it does not encompass all aspects, as it also involves a variety of responsibilities that give deeper meaning to this process.
One of the roles of caregivers is to prepare children for adulthood (Peterson, 2022). Each day, caregivers make decisions and act deliberately to help children develop strong character, respect, a sense of responsibility, motivation, and skills that enable them to succeed both in childhood and adulthood. Likewise, leadership is closely linked to this preparation. The actions of caregivers often have a more significant impact than their words. Leading by example is considered more effective than merely delivering lessons. While this approach may seem like a heavy responsibility that requires diverse parenting skills, it can also be enjoyable. According to Peterson (2022), this preparation largely takes place through joint outings, family games, and generally sharing life experiences.
The meaning of parenthood, perhaps even more relevant than preparation, lies in the attitude and act of offering unconditional love (Peterson, 2022). Raising children can present complex challenges and difficult moments; however, a relationship based on love creates a lasting bond. In this sense, showing love towards children contributes to their well-being and development. A hug, a kiss on the head, or a shared laugh can represent the essence of parenthood (Peterson, 2022). In conclusion, the parenting of children can be defined, according to Gadsden et al. (2016), as a fundamental mechanism of socialization, an essential means to shape and prepare children to face the demands of their environment and seize the opportunities presented to them.
