Importance of Clinical Psychology

Updated: Apr 6

It is estimated that one in four people in Spain suffers from some type of mental illness, and furthermore, the prevalence of these disorders is expected to continue rising in the coming years (Hospital Perpetuo Socorro, 2019). This reality highlights the growing need for psychological care, as the complexity of modern society—with its multiple demands and fast-paced lifestyle — intensifies risk factors for mental health. In this context, the role of clinical psychologists is becoming increasingly essential, not only in treating mental disorders but also in preventing them and promoting overall well-being. As a result, these professionals are gradually gaining greater recognition within both the healthcare and social spheres (Hospital Perpetuo Socorro, 2019). Therefore, according to Figueroba (n.d.), clinical psychology holds a crucial role in contemporary society, becoming a key pillar in addressing the emotional and cognitive challenges people face today.

A common belief among the general public is that the main goal of clinical psychology is to increase happiness and improve quality of life (Figueroba, n.d.). While this idea is not incorrect, it presents a limited view of the true scope of the discipline. Many people have a general notion of what clinical psychologists do, particularly regarding the treatment of mental disorders. However, the contributions of clinical psychology are much broader and more diverse (Figueroba, n.d.). In addition to its therapeutic role, clinical psychology also plays an important part in scientific research, continually seeking new ways to understand behavior and develop more effective interventions (Universidad Tangamanga, 2019). Like other areas of mental health, this field is constantly evolving. According to Universidad Tangamanga (2019), this involves the development and refinement of techniques, strategies, and methodologies aimed at improving treatments, preventing psychological problems, and promoting overall well-being.

Similarly, knowledge of clinical psychology is important for improving interpersonal relationships (Figueroba, n.d.). Clinical psychologists are trained professionals capable of helping individuals enhance their social skills, mediate in divorce situations, and intervene in cases of bullying or workplace harassment, among other issues (Figueroba, n.d.; Ficto, 2020). Their work is essential in today’s society (Matus, 2016). Finally, it is worth emphasizing the importance of early psychological treatment, as untreated psychological issues can negatively affect not only the individual but also those around them (Matus, 2016). Therefore, as stated by Universidad Tangamanga (2019), addressing mental disorders is key to promoting coexistence, safety, and stability for all members of society.
